Subject:Slave Fruity Loops, Reason or other synth's to Acid?

Hi All,

I've decided to brave the depths of utilities like Midi Yoke and Sonic Foundry's Virtual Midi Router VMR. I'd like to control FruityLoops, though ideally Reason with Acid but for the life of me I'm still stuck at understanding the differences between master and slave on either end and how one can tell the difference between inputs and outputs.

We refer to these things as midi-in on one app and midi-out on the other, but in the actual preferences dialogs the terms are different.

Simply put, what exactly to I have to set in Acid to control a relatively simple app such as FruityLoops?

Thanks in Advance,
Fred

Ta da.

(I should note you'd treat the VMR like a piece of hardware.)

Ok, so I read that link and again the terminology screws me up. In frutiy loops, these are the options:

Remote control input
Playing output (port 0)
Master sync output
Keyboard input (ignore velocities & record to step sequencer & toggle on release)
remote control (auto accept controller & delete mapping)

Options Menu:
Enable Midi Remote control
Enable Midi Output
Enable Master Sync

In Acid the options are:

Options Menu > Preferences > Sync:
Generate Midi Timecode Settings (output device & Frame Rate)
Generate Midi clock settings (output device)
Trigger from Midi Timecode settings (output device, frame rate)

Options Menu > Preferences > Midi
Make these devices available (list of midi ports)
Midi Thru device for recording
Default DLS set for midi playback

Options Menu > Timecode:
Generate Midi Timecode
Gnerate Midi Clock
Trigger from Midi timecode

I have the Sonic foundry VMR installed as well as Midi Yoke, so I've got a multitude of ports.

The instructions also generalize a bunch of midi instructions that I don't know such as "chase midi clock". What does it all mean?

Extra thanks to those who actually read this whole thing.

Fred

As I understand it Acidpro3 is only happy as a master and FL can ONLY act as master. But this is just what I understand.... haven;t tried it. But the next version opf FL will also act as a VSTi...

I'll put an 'x' in front of the settings i'd toggle first and perhaps this may help you understand........

Fruity Loops:

Remote control input
Playing output (port 0)
Master sync output
Keyboard input (ignore velocities & record to step sequencer & toggle on release)
x remote control (auto accept controller & delete mapping)

Options Menu:
x Enable Midi Remote control
Enable Midi Output
x Enable Master Sync

In Acid the options are:

Options Menu > Preferences > Sync:
x Generate Midi Timecode Settings (output device & Frame Rate)
x Generate Midi clock settings (output device)
Trigger from Midi Timecode settings (output device, frame rate)

Options Menu > Preferences > Midi
x Make these devices available (list of midi ports)
Midi Thru device for recording
Default DLS set for midi playback

Options Menu > Timecode:
x Generate Midi Timecode
x Gnerate Midi Clock
Trigger from Midi timecode

this config should make fl=slave/ap=master. remote control should allow you to 'trigger' fl from midi commands you setup, that are sent from acid. also, if there are settings for 'exclusive', toggle them as well...

in the old days we'd have to 'stripe' a sync track (either fsk, midi, or smpte) to tape in order to keep the instruments in sync. this sync track sent controller on/off commamds to the instruments.

as an experiment, try to write a sync track and set both acid and fl's clocks as ext?? here is a sequencer that may help you sync the two: http://www.jazzware.com/cgi-bin/Zope.cgi/jazzware/

if all else fails...open the help menu.
