Subject:SF5 adds unwanted silence to MP3's when saving

I am editing a waveform to use as a loop and I wish to save it as an MP3 - I go through the save procedure...no problems. when I re-open the loop, it has added a very short silence to the start and end points or the wave, which obviously makes correct playback of the loop an impossible task.

Is there a way to avoid this silence being entered (perhaps something I need to adjust or switch off to stop it happening???)

This is part of the MP3 standard and there is no way around it. You could always use the chopper in ACID to remove the silences, but this is not an ideal solution. If you want to use this file for looping, you should be saving it as a .WAV file. This also lets you save the "ACIDizing" information in the file.

Cheers for that - I'll try the ACID solution and if not then WAV's it is!

Thanks for the help.

Interesting. I was going to post a very similar question on the Dreamweaver forum.

The question is that when I save an MP3 to play as a background loop on a webpage there is a short break at the end before it starts again. I thought I must have been something wrong. But this is the way MP3s work is it ?

Yes, and we're stuck with it. *sigh* I don't really understand the necessity for it though. Sometimes i'd like to sit down with the people who make these decisions and have a very long heart to heart talk. Oh well, maybe someone will create a utility that encodes MP3 files without the extra silence ;)

I did some tests to figure out the length of the blank and I did measure the number of samples (I can give you the length if you want once I find this piece of paper again ;).
I use to do a selection by number of samples in Sound Forge and then I delete it.
That works perfectly !

Sounds like a good option for SF6: "encode for looping"
:)

The offset generated by Lame is of 2738 samples. I think it is the same with other encoder !
I use to delete it by hand with the Edit menu and selection. You can specify the number of samples to select and I just delete it.
