Subject:Batch Converter 5.0b vanishes

I own SoundForge v6. Last time I used batch converter, I didn't bother to get the one off the CD and used the demo one instead. The result, hundreds of lost sound files that had noises deliberately inserted. I foolishly let the batch Converter overwrite original files.

So now I have the real Batch Converter from the CD installed. I want it to normalize about 50 or so sound files. The first time that I click "Convert Files", I got an exception (crash). So I re-installed all of Sound Forge, even downloaded the latest 6.0a. What happens now?! As soon as I press "Convert Files", the Batch Converter disappears -- no error -- no message -- nothing.

I think that SonicFoundry may be on a mission to get me. Am I wrong? Someone please help.

Hello, it's me again. I managed to get batch Converter to crash again instead of disappear. Here's the error:

What version and build of the wav plugin is your Batch Converter using? To find out, in the Batch Converter Script page, set your output file setting for the Convert to: Format to "Wave (Microsoft)" and click the About button. This can help us diagnose your problem.

Any other specific details about how you've set up Batch Converter before you clicked Convert Files would be helpful, such as exactly what your settings were in the Output File Settings pane. I'd recommend always outputting your converted files to a different folder so you don't overwrite your original source files.

Other things to try: does it work for a different type of audio processing on the same files? what if you try to process only the first file, or first few files?

Hello. Thanks for answering so quickly. I had these settings:
File Folder: Same as Source File
File Names: Same as Source File
File Format: Same as source file.

All the files to be converted were MP3 files, not wav files, but this is the "about" for "Wave (Microsoft)":

Wave (Microsoft) File Format Plug-in.
Version 1.2 (Build 228)
C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Shared Plug-Ins\File Formats\wavplug.dll

Hope this helps. Thanks.

What OS are you running? We'll try to repro the problem here.

Curious that your crash is in the wav plugin as reported by the crash dump. Are your .mp3 files true MP3 files (not wav files encoded using the MPEG Layer-3 format setting)? Do they load into Sound Forge 6 OK?

I am running XP Home, but am upgrading to XP Pro soon.

Yes, the files had no problems normalizing inside SoundForge 6.0.

But you're onto something here. When I looked at the file's details inside SoundForge, they said wave. So I renamed a couple of these mp3s to wav, normalized and converted to mp3 (this step cost me another $20) and... it worked.

Obviously, there's something I don't completely understand here. I did not create these mp3-named files so I cannot make any claims how they were recorded. I experimented with mp3 from trusted sources and all worked in batch Converter.

Do you have an article that explains what's going on here ???

BTW. While investigating this problem, I discovered 2 different wave dlls in the Sonic Foundry folders, one in Common, one in SoundForge. They were different versions so I copied the newer one over old one.

It is _not_ a good idea to copy the wav or any other DLL from Forge's folder and overwrite the shared plugin location that Batch Converter and other of our applications use.

This wav DLL hasn't been regression tested with BC or other apps. It is meant for Sound Forge's private use only. It will cause problems with the uninstall when you remove the last Sonic Foundry application that uses it.

I emailed you the MP3-named file. Let me know if you don't receive it. The properties of this file in SoundForge say:

File name: "X-1 551020 Ep 021 Child's Play.mp3"
File Type: "Wave (Microsoft)"
Audio Format: "MP3"
Audio Attributes: "22,050 Hz, 16-bit, Mono"

P.S. The properties page in SoundForge should allow me to copy to the clip board.
