Let's say I have a bunch of audio files. Maybe a concert I downloaded from Furthurnet or got in a trade. It's already broken up into tracks, but it was recorded to softly and was never normalized. How can I normalize all the tracks, but keep them in correct relation to each other. In other words, I want all the files to be normalized the same amount as the loudest track. I know I could append all the tracks together, normalize and then break them apart together. That's a lot of work. Anyone have any ideas of a quicker way to do this? I have SF6, VV3 and Batch Converter to work with. Thanks.

Well, in your case, you simply want a volume increase. If you know which file is the loudest, find out how much of an increase it needs to bring it's loudest peak up to the level you want. Then increase the volume on the other files by the same amount. One you've determined the proper increase, you can use Batch Converter to process all of them.

Since normalizing is based on raising the highest peak to 0dB, isn't that basically doing the same thing?

No, cuz what he's saying is find out how much to normalize the loudest file. Then normalize increase the volume of the rest by the same number of DB. Only question is how to quickly find the loudest file. But once again, CW, thanks.

yirm, under Tools, Statistics, you can quickly find out the loudest point in a file. Look for Maximum sample value. You'll have to compare the left & right channel values to see which one is larger.
