ultimately id like to transfer all my lps into nice little mp3 files but so far, im having trouble just recording. i have the demo version of soundforge 5 studio and xp. ive tried to record on both. ive played with the sound levels on the computer, ive set my recordings to be 16-bit and 44,000hz. but still, when i record from turntable->mixer->soundcard->computer i get a very muffled , really low volume playback, plus fridge-buzz-type noise throughout, although it sounds perfectly fine during the actual recording. do i just have one of those cheap sound cards or is there anything i can do to get a decent recording? |

You may not be setting up your sound card's input mixer properly for recording. The level control you've been playing with is probably for listening only. Double-click the little yellow speaker icon in the lower right corner to bring up the volume control. Click Options, Properties, Recording, [OK]. You will now be looking at the volume controls for recording. Make sure the input you want to use is selected and se the volume level there. If you have Sound Forge running and in record mode while you're doing this you can watch the effect of changing the volume control on Sound Forge's meters in real time. Also note that MP3 encoding is limited in the demo version. Depending on which version of Sound Forge XP you have it's either disabled or limited to 20 encodes. You'll have to purchase a license to get full MP3 encoding ability. After you purchase your license you will be asked to register the MP3 encoder the first time you use it (in addition to registering the Sound Forge license). Don't panic ... this second registration is free. |
