I'm a computer dummy and can't figure out how to get sounforge to accept input for recording from an old drum machine by patching its' MIDI "out" to the computers MIDI "input". There must be something very simple I'm not doing. And yes, it's OK to laugh at me...

Sound Forge does not support MIDI recording. You would need a sequencer (Cakewalk, Steinberg etc.) to record MIDI messages. If your drum machine has audio outs (usually 1/4" jacks) you can connect them to the line in (probably 1/8" stereo) on your sound card and record that audio signal in Sound Forge. Sound Forge is an audio editor.

Simply speaking;

Audio = a digital representation of a sound wave.
MIDI = messages telling a synthesizer (creates audio) what pitch to play, how loud for how long and when.

I have a sequencer in my synth...it MIDI's with my drum machine and "tells it what to play"...they play together. I can patch the drum machine to the soundcard via the 1/4-->1/8 jacks. The drum machine is digital though and I would have expected SF to accept a digital interface but I'm a computer dummy, what do I know..

One more question if I could...
Can you "play" one data screen while recording onto another in sf 6.0? Thanks alot for your help!!!!!!

"The drum machine is digital though and I would have expected SF to accept a digital interface"

Very simply speaking;
All computers function digitally, they use 1s & 0s (digits) to process everything. Your synth and drum machine are also computers.

Audio = a digital representation of a sound wave, think of audio as analog sound. Very large files.

MIDI = messages telling a synthesizer (creates audio) what pitch to play, how loud for how long and when. Very small files by comparison.

"Can you "play" one data screen while recording onto another in sf 6.0?"

Sorry, no. What you need for that is a multi-track recorder. You should have received one (Vegas Video) bundled with SF 6.
