ok gang i just bought ableton live-sequencing program
4 stores told me it is awesome to dj remix records
hotkeys---which is exactly what i wanted
i can assign various beats, samples, etc to computer keys
two problems!!!!!
there is lag!!!
oh yea, it says it right in the program about 100,000 times
try to account for lag
what kind of crap is this??
i hit a key---and then 2 seconds later the beat starts--nice program
also, i wanted to hit the key and when i release it the sample stops---no such luck-
these are the only 2 features i wanted
i guess you can't always get what you want
but the problem is, i asked 4 stores--they all said i could
then i call them back and say i can't--they say--
oh, i thought you could
these same geniuses also said acid pro 3.0 is nothing compared to ableton
acid blows it away and i don't even really know all the features yet
if anyone knows of a samplers--sequencer--that will allow me to excerise the 2 features i am looking for please please please tell me
in the meantime i am flushing this peice of crap software down the toilet
btw, i have american standard toilet, there is no lag when i flush the toilet

Hey SB,

Two things:

First off, the lag can be modified by using the Quantize feature; you can set it to Quarters, Eigths, whatever and you can turn it off so the samples play immediately. The way Live works is that when you hit a key it plays the sample at the next note value the quantize is set for. I mean, because of latency, you'll never get an exact key down/key up deal but you can get pretty close. I got it down to about 3ms.

Secondly, the on/off deal you spoke of is the "toggle" feature and it WILL NOT WORK with the computer keyboard; you have to use another controller of some sort. I use Oxygen for that. The Akai SPD 16 works really well, also.

Don't flush it just yet; play a little longer..it really is pretty cool. I've done a couple of tunes for my CD with Live and a boatload of gigs. If you need help, email me and we will get it going. Cool?

I know that Live uses ASIO. Have you tried that driver type instead?

I have creative live 5.1 soundcard...are you talking about that? what asio drivers? I just download their xp drivers and the package is auto install...do you mean that?

No. ASIO is a driver architecture, much like WDM and MME (believe both are commonly used in DirectX, but I'm no expert on the issue). It was developed by Steinberg.

ASIO uses a very low latency architecture. It's quite good and is actually preferred if you can use it.

I don't think the Soundblaster Live! has ASIO drivers but the Soundblaster Audigy does.

Sounds to me like your hardware is just not up to the job and is introducing unacceptable latency. A decent soundcard is an absolute must.

thnx you guys for getting back to me
but in the manual is says -- at least 10 times - there will be lag
they even have a section on how best to deal with it
if i knew there was going to be lag i never would have bought it
i hate lag!!!
although the word itelf is pretty cool
anyway, thanks for your input
i have a m-audio sound card
omni studio--i bought in november for vv3
112 gig hard drive
1.6 ghz cpu
512 ram
currently i own a dr boss digital sampler---i guess i will hook it up through my mixer and make music that way--in acid of course
but i wanted to use my computer for everything---
anyway, thanks everyone for your input--i will be reading this forum 4-ever now since i now officially an acid user--and look forward to learning cool tips from you guys (and girls if there are any out there)
cheers :)

well, like I said...it can be dealt with...no, it's not your gear. The program has some lag but it SHOULD NOT be preventing you from using it. If you want help, lemme know...if not, that's cool too.
