Subject:AcidPro4: a few questions from new to this...

I just received info about A-Pro4 and I must say I'm thinking about bying this one since I mostly do Video Editing and it's always a hassle trying to make some music of my own to match different loops, visual "punches" in sync with picture, etc...
So my questions are:
Is it possible, since Acid now RECORDS, to make my own loops? I mean, record any sound and craft my own loop, a little bit like a "sampler combined with a loop-maker" would do? If so, will I be able to "re-quantize" these loops to fit exactly with the already existing loops I could be using in an already started project?

Can I take a slightly offset beat and "straighten" it so it's thight (I'm not a really good drummer you know but for purposes of speed, I like to make my beats "live" as much as possible with my ooooooowld Alesis HR-16...). And, yeah, how far can I stretch a loop 'til it really sucks?

Info: my sound card is a "SoundCrapper Live Value!" and I'd like to change for a Guillemot Game Theatre XP (is it a good choice or am I heading right into trouble like I did with the one I already own?) and my speakers are Logitech Z-560. I like these speakers a lot, but my neighbours... mmm that's another story anyway...

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

futz,

1. I have been creating loopage with Acid IN Acid for a long time. Acid 4 will only add to the fun. However, based on the issues cropping up with 4.0...I would wait until at least the first update to get it.

2. Just one man's opinion but if you are at all interested in doing any serious audio/video work, get a good card - not a gamer card. M-Audio...RME...Echo and many others come to mind. Do a search in the forums here to get some perspectives...

Bottom line: Pro audio cards deliver pro audio. Any cards intended for gaming or simply listening to toonz generally do not.

I second both of CuzinB's recommendations.

To add to that, I would highly recommend a digital audio editor to help tweak your recorded loops in ACID Pro. You have the option of picking up Sound Forge Studio 6 with ACID Pro 4.0 for free. It only does 16-bit, 48 kHz audio max, but it will get the job done in helping you to "ACIDize" your takes.

With a digital audio editor such as Sound Forge, you can record your take in ACID, open it up in Sound Forge, and when you're done editing the audio, save in Sound Forge and it will be automatically updated in ACID once you switch back to it. (You more than likely will have to reload the file and repaint the track, but this is a lot less scary than it sounds, trust me.)

Acid IN Acid ??? You're loosing me a bit here. You mean you open a project into an already opened project?

Thanks for advice on the card. I better go with ISIS I think, from the same company since it's cheap AND intended for musicians instead of gamers. What was appealing in fact was the breakout box which came with the Hercules GameTheatre XP: ins and outs plus USB... but there's hell of a good one, it seems, too, with ISIS. But I gotta check for the "surround" option concerning this card...
All in all: thanks!

***You have the option of picking up Sound Forge Studio 6 with ACID Pro 4.0 for free. ***

I didn't notice!!! I'm gonna check for it now. If I get it well, it's not the FULL version of S.Forge 6 ain't it? Anyway, there's a start to everything and I sould really have fun with this first package like you said. And I guess 16bit-44kHz must be enough for me at the moment...
Thanks!!!

Oh, I am an idiot.

I forgot to mention that the free Sound Forge Studio 6 offer is by email only. Click here and join via the "Email Sign-Up" field in the upper right. If you still don't get the offer at that point by the end of the week or so, try giving SoFo a call at 1-800-577-6642.

(Yes, it is the full version of Sound Forge Studio 6.0, not Sound Forge 6.0. There's a difference.)

Sorry about that.

futz,

Re: "Acid IN Acid ??? You're loosing me a bit here. You mean you open a project into an already opened project?"

No - I mean taking existing bits (or newly recorded ones or a combination of both)and dumping them into the Chopper and goin' nuts. You can slice and dice for days and save out all these bits and pieces into new loopage. tis lots o Fun!

When you say "cheap"....how much cake are we talking here?

Are you saying Acis and SF only handle 16 bit?

ACID Pro is the only version of ACID that can do 24-bit/192 kHz. All the others do 16-bit/48 kHz.

There are two versions of Sound Forge:

Sound Forge Studio 6.0: Basically a "lighter" version of Sound Forge 6.0. Does 16-bit/48 kHz audio max.

Sound Forge 6.0: Fully-featured digital audio editor. Full 24-bit and 32-bit (64-bit float) and up to 192 kHz audio. Has more helpful looping tools as well.

Oddboy: Nope. Sonic Foundry 6 (NOT "Studio") will handle 24 bits...

Thanks for the tip about the offer MD, I'll write right now or phone them since I'm leaving tomorrow for 3 weeks (it'll probably be History by then...).
And about the Maxi ISIS system by Guillemot, it's around $270.00 (US) I guess cause here in Canada you can find it for $390 Canadian bucks at www.shoplci.com
Guillemot site for the Hercules GameTheatre6.1 (around $115.00 US) : http://us.hercules.com/products/product.php3?id=36
Oops... I just see the Maxi ISIS studio isn't sold anymore... I think they've abandonned the "Guillemot" line of products (Guillemot is now the name of the whole company) to only keep Hercules and ThrustMaster lines...
But, anyway, you can have a look at the specs for the GameTheatreXP...

futz,

I am in Canada as well. If this card is going to run ya 400.00 bucks...you would be better off looking at one of those brands I mentioned earlier. You could pick up an M-Audio Delta 66 for the same cash and be well on your way.

Just a thought...

Guess what? (by the way, I already had their letter in my other e-mail adress so I'm in for the discounts... :D )
Ok, guess what now: you can download Acid Pro for 100$, without taking the "box version" +SF option (which is the same "Acid" and you then save another 100$$). Now you tell me: what about Sound Forge Studio 6? You can download it **now** for 60$ (see the "products" section)...!!! All this for a total of 160$ instead of paying 200$ for the whole "special offer packaged" thing. Buying "separate" is better than buying "special offer"... the world's going berserk!!!
Have a look!
