I downloaded the demo of Acid 4.0. What are the steps to make voices work in midi? I have added the DLS snyth to a midi track. I double click the snyth in the mixer and a list of voices come up. There is no change to the sound of the midi track regardless of the voice I select. I've tried with an 'imported' midi file and one created from scratch using the piano roll. Am I missing a step or is this a bug? I'm using Windows XP Pro, Pentium 4, CPU 2GB with 1GB of ram and a Soundblaster Audigy soundcard. As far as I know all my drivers are up to date.

Has anyone one else had similar problems with midi?

Thanks

The DLS softsynth does not permit you to select the "active" patch from its UI. It lists the available voices in the currently loaded/selected DLS voice set. It is an inventory of voices not a selector of an active voice.

To change a voice when playing through the DLS softsynth, you have to send a program change to the DLS synth on the MIDI channel you are playing MIDI notes on.

If you are creating a new MIDI track in ACID, no default "patch" is set. You need to use the List Editor for that track to set the patch you want to hear.

If you are using an exisiting MIDI file, then it will typically have voice patches in the MIDI data stream. These can be seen and edited in the List Editor for that track.

We are looking at ways to make the DLS synth more user friendly.

Thanks for the information - it certainly isn't user friendly at the moment (!) but I could change the sound by using the track list editor. But what is the relationship between the DLS softsynth inventory and the choices executable within the list editor?

For example, the DLS Softsynth lists:

Tubular Bell Patch# 14, Bank MSB 0 Bank LSB 0
Church Bell Patch# 14, Bank MSB 8 Bank LSB 0

In the list editor I changed the setting to:

Bank MSB 0 Bank LSB 0 Patch 14
and got Tubular Bell

But when I changed it to

Bank MSB 8 Bank LSB 0 Patch 14
I still got Tubular Bell

I was expecting Church Bell. It's not just the name, the sound didn't change either.

That the name of the Patch can't be seen until it is selected is inconvenient but if I can't use the names in the DLS softsynth inventory to guide me to selecting patches then I can't see what use having the inventory is.

Or am I missing something again?

Regards,

Chris

The names display by the DLS synth are what the DLS voice set names them.

The voice names we display in the List Editor are the default GM voice names as define by the GM MIDI spec.

Probelm is that there is no standard way to communicate voice set names between synths and editors currently. Every sequencer does it a little differently. Cakewalk has INS files. Cubase does something different. We are looking for a means to do librarian and voice set names that are consistent.

The DLS feels a bit obtuse for me at the moment. Instead I recommend downloading some of the dozens of excellent free VSTi instruments and use them instead. Operation with them is pretty straightforward.
