Subject:External MIDI editor ?

I have tried some MIDI features in Acid 4.
I'm afraid that Acid will never be as powerful as other MIDI editors. It's still incomplete, why ?
I expected a lot but I'm not really determined to upgrade.
(I'm still using SmpteTrack by Hybrid Arts on my old Atari 1040ST - I've never found better MIDI software - I could write a lot about it but it's not the main topic of this forum).

I think that Sonic Foundry should develop its own external MIDI editor (Midi Forge ?) with ALL the basic functions (again, have a look at SmpteTrack features).
Here are some, just for information :
- Extract channels
- Zone split track
- Key split track
- Quantize and Humanize (move note, shift attack)
- Durate
- Velocity adjust (shift, scale, set)
- Replace events
- Eliminate events
- Mix and Unmix tracks
- Graphical editing for all Controls, Velocity, Modulation, ...
- System Exclusive (SysEx) editing
- ...

Thanks for reading.

MIDI-Forge sounds like a good idea - it's been mentioned a few times recently: a really detailed, dedicated app. SoundForge has it's good reputation because it doesn't try to be everything for everyone, you know what it's strengths are and that's why you buy it.

Personally I'd never buy a MIDI-Forge, just because I prefer audio. AcidPro4 has just about the right amount of MIDI for me.

Actually, I'm using MIDI for creating my own loops (played with an external Sound Canvas SC88pro). Then, I record the loops in wave audio (*) and assemble them in Acid.
However, MIDI editing is needed to build more complex loops (drums, multi-layer, ...). We should never forget than a MIDI file is just ... an electronic score. Imagine a word processor that does not permit to correct mistakes...

----------------------------------------
(*) Each loop is pre-processed (noise reduction, EQ, normalize) and the final mix in Acid is better than the whole MIDI file played on the sound module.

What you want is all very doable with in the OPT plugin framework. There are very few limitations. We will always advance our own editors and believe that the third party vendors will find a niche here. Perhaps someone will model and editor after Htybrid Arts. (I use to use the 1040ST for all my MIDI stuff. Still have the box set up, though I don't use it much anymore. Just for ideas on how things might work.)

The flexablity is there.

Peter
