I think the Sonic Foundry team should set up SoundForge to work with layers similar to Adobe Photoshop, so that I could have a drum loop, and then chop up music and copy and paste it on top of the drums, but on a seperate "layer" so that i could then remove the bottom layer of drums, and export the sample loop. I love using SoundForge for making beats, but without having layer support it makes it very limiting. |

Try Vegas. It is multi-track, or as you put it, layers. Or for what you are doing, Acid may be the trick. It's been a long time since I recommended someone give Acid a try... oh, yeah, We're talking software. RiRo |

Well, Acid is OK, but the wave editor in acid is horrible compared to the wave editor in SoundForge. The ability to highlight an area with the mouse, then click and drag to mix makes it so good for what I need to do. The next best thing is Sonar, but I'd love to do it in SoundForge. Come on Sonic Foundry, hook it up. |

Hip, You're really looking for a multi-track app. Sound Forge isn't, as you know. I think if SoFo went that route with it, it would start to water down Forge's strengths. It's nice to be in Sonar or Vegas and beable to throw a .wav into SF for a quick snip or freshen-up and send it back. I would rather have apps that focus on one aspect than try to do a little of everything. (MHO) |

As a Sound Forge user, I believe you're elegible for Vegas LE, which is only 8 tracks, but should be enough for your purposes. Check it out. DSG |

The thing is, with all of those multitracking programs you can layer your samples, and export each seperately for a good mix down, but you don't have the excellent highlighting, drag and drop mixing, or precise capability of a linear wave editor like soundforge. If they incorperated a photoshop like layer setup in SoundForge, it would give them a massive advantage over all other linear wave editors. It wouldn't be for multitracking or sequencing, but instead for the precise placement of cut and mixed sounds, with the ability to remove the bottom layer, or any layer for that matter. |

Sort of like a "preview before pasting" thing? The new part you're adding can float on top and let you hear what it will be like before actually combining it with the main file allow you to adjust the mixing and positioning, and then when you're satisfied with the result you can permanently paste it like "combine layers". Is that what you're after? |

"but you don't have the excellent highlighting, drag and drop mixing, or precise capability of a linear wave editor like soundforge." Really? Have you tried Vegas yet? Vegas's editing style is very similar to Sound Forge and sounds like the exact thing you're asking for. Also, anything that you can't do in Vegas, you can just right click on an event and "open in sound forge", and it is automatically highlighted in Forge and your edit get's updated in Vegas. I'm not quite sure, what you mean by not having the "precise capability of a linear wave editor", because Vegas seems like it has more precise placement than Sound Forge and you can put your waves on seperate tracks and MUTE and UNMUTE, just like layers you're asking for. |
