Subject:Sudden failure to read wav. files

Has anyone experienced Acid not recognizing wav. files. I'm not sure what I did to cause this. I've had no problem in the past with this kind of file playback.

If ACID does not recognize WAV files in it's Explorer view, then most likely you have a flawed installation. Try using the Repair option through Add/Remove Programs or remove and install ACID again.
