I have been banging my head against the wall all day trying to remove this very weird warbly hiss background noise from this speech file (http://www.duke.edu/~nathan/).

After playing with noise reduction I have determined that there are in fact 2 mysterious noises in this file - One being regular hiss that NR removes nicely and another being some wierd warbly stuff that occurs only when the speaker talks but I can't figure out the frequency range it is appearing in.

I believe the original source of this was recorded in digital format. Any help or suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for being tacky and including a sample of the file but I knew of no other way to convey to you all the noise.

NOTE: I am not asking for someone to blatantly fix this for me, just to maybe play with it and see if you have any suggestions so I can fix it.

Thanks Again

well, because i was bored i decided to give it a go. and i have to conclude, there is indeed a weird extra noise, which is only audible as the voice speaks. this might very well be the result of bad digital recording. i couldn't find a way to get it out, or even less audible. to me it sounds like the input level was too loud during the recording, but since it's digital it has been digitally prevented from clipping. i dunno....

i give you small hope to get that particular noise out. good luck anyway.

Sounds less like a "warble" and more like background/line noise. If there was a gate used on the mic when recording, you would only hear it when the voice is speaking. This will happen when the gain is set too low (it is also why I don't like using a gate anymore -- if you only get the noise on the recording, you can't isolate it). See if you can grab a "tail" and capture that noise print in NR.

Thanks a lot ATP and Jessariah. I really need the confirmation that it was bad recording on their part. Good info with the gain too. You guys rock!
