Subject:LFE track is empty?

Hi, I've been playing around with the 5.1 capabilities of Acid 4.0, and I'm having some strange trouble. When rendering the 6 tracks of a 5.1 project, the LFE channel always seems to come out empty. Playing LFE.WAV in Windows Media player (through a THX certified 4.1 system) I hear absolutely nothing, even if the volume is on full blast. I know there's a full range of base in my project, so what's the deal? This problem occurs whether or not "enable low-pass filter on LFE" is checkmarked in the project properties. Help? Thanks, Luxo |

in order to use the LFE in your sorround projects you have to explicitly route the tracks you want to the LFE. You can do this by right clicking on the panner control in the track you want routed to LFE and selecting LFE only from the pop up menu. This track will only be routed to LFE then. If you want to also have the track available for the sorround channels as well as the LFE you will have to duplicate the track. Only one of the tracks should then be routed to LFE. You should see level in the meter for the LFE channel when you playback your project and the LFE.wav will _THEN_ contain audio. |

I'll admit that I'm not sure of the exact ins & outs of 5.1 standards, but in Acid you choose to either surround pan a track or send it to the LFE buss. (Right click on the track surround panner and choose 'LFE only', or open up the Surround Panner window and enable the LFE button). The enable Low Pass Filter means that when you send a full range signal to the LFE channel you only hear the bass end coming through. If you duplicate a track you can assign one to surround pan, and the second to the LFE. A better way to work is to create a new buss and make it an LFE feed - any track that you want to send to the LFE you can turn up the send to buss A, and leave the track surround pan doing it's surround thing! That's cool... I'm glad you mentioned the buss routing to LFE tip. That's another way to feed the LFE channel audio. Ivan |

Thanks guys. I'm not quite sure how to use the additional buss (I can add it, but I get lost quickly) but I'll play around with it. I'm sure there's great reason behind this design, but I'm so obviously new to 5.1 mixing it eludes me. Why wouldn't you want the low end of all your tracks routed to the LFE? For instance, are vocals typically reserved solely for the center channel, and should I reserve the subwoofer for music and sound effects? I'm a video editor, and bought Acid 4.0 almost exclusively for the 5.1 capabilities, so pardon my ignorance while I cut my teeth. Thanks again, Luxo |

Hi Luxo: Can you tell me what software you use for encoding 5.1 files? In other words , how do you render the 6 tracks of 5.1 projects? Thanks, Lawrence |
