Subject:changing default Record folder

hi there.

every time i open ACID and want to record a piece of MIDI, it suggests my Documents folder as the place to store the midi files. i have made my own folder for this, so every time i record something i have to browse to this folder before i can actually record the midi.

is there a way to set a Default folder? ie. i'd set it once to the folder i made, and then it remembers this setting for all future projects. these kind of things really hamper my workflow, and i'm a bit surprised there is no option to make a folder the default.

any info on this?

I believe that was by design. When you specify a folder for recording your material into, it will stay that way until you close the current project and/or start a new project, which will then go back to the My Documents folder.

What does that mean? It means that, when you save a project, the current recording folder also gets saved with the project. When you open this project later on and press Record, that very same folder will pop up. (Giving you ideas yet?)

You could create a template by simply hitting Record, specify a folder for recording, click "Cancel", and then save the ACID project with a title like, "My Recording Template."

Good suggestion, mD!

Yes, ACID currently saved the last used recording/new MIDI track folder with the project, as opposed to with the application. This does have it's benefits, as it makes it less likely that you will record all of your tracks for all of your projects into the same folder only to find out that you aren't sure which is which. Often at this point, the only solution is to listen to all of them and decide which you need where; seriously time consuming.

The default to My Documents was required to be fully compliant with non-administrator users under 2K and XP. These OS's will not necessarily allow you to save to the project (or any system) folder. The My Documents folder is kept separate for each user, so the chances of one user overwriting another's work are much less.

Hope this helps,
Nate

ah, i see. i didn't think about it that way.

hmm actually that's pretty nifty. i don't use seperate folders for tracks until i finished the song. then i copy everything to a new folder from within ACID. i do this because if i were to copy each sample i *might* use in a track to its own folder, i end up with a lot of double samples which i may not use.

but i guess i'll either have to change my methods, or just adapt to the fact i have to set it manually once with every project.

Nate, i can see now why you chose the My Docs folder. it makes a lot more sense to me now.

thanks for the insight, guys. :)
