Subject:Is acid 4 still in beta???

I have not had problems with Acid up until version 4. It crashes my machine, it crashes and does not release the sound card (Layla) driver, it crashes upon opening up some older songs (v3), etc., etc., etc. I have a P2-400, 512k ram, win me, layla, sounblaster live platinum and easy bus installed. I have tried 4.0, which I paid the upgrade price for and the 4.0 a with no luck. Also, it seems to lose my audio preferences after crashing. I am going back to v3 until the bugs are worked out. It is VERY upsetting to support a product and get these kinds of results. All other programs, i.e. Cubase 5.1, Cool Edit2, Reason 2, etc. work fine!!!!
Up until now, Acid has been a very stable program. WHAT"S GOING ON SONIC FOUNDRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

clarksil,

What exactly happens that crashes your machine? Does it reboot? Freeze? BSoD? Also, what are you doing when it crashes? Can you give us some specs on your system?

Please, with more info we can probably help you out.

Nate

Nate,
As I mentioned, I have a P2-400, 512k ram, Win ME, Soundblaster Live Platinum, Echo Layla 20, EZ Bus. The following situations have occurred:
1. BsoD
2. I will play a song, hit the pause button and Acid will freeze.
3. I will attempt to open certain songs created with v3 (no midi) and it will say an exception has occurred and the program will basically close without even opening.
4. It will crash, I'll ctrl-alt-del to close it, yet when trying to use my Layla with another program such as Cool Edit, I cannot use the Layla driver as it appears that Acid has not released the driver and I have to reboot to get the driver back.
5. It will crash and freeze when trying to set up a VSTi.
6. It will crash when I try to set up an alternate VSTi folder in preferences. After searching through the folder it just stops, gives an error message which I cannot recall at present as I am at work, and then freezes. Also, If I setup a separate folder in my program files directory, and place a copy of the VSTi dll in that folder, then it seems to recognize them, but I shouldn't have to keep 2 copies of the VSTi's on my system
6. I have had these problems in both v4 and v4a

clarksil,

Wow. All of this freezing almost certainly has to be related to drivers or some other system-level code. ACID itself contains no kernel-code (although ASIO drivers do). What video card are you using with this setup? How does WinME run for you in general? Are you using the WDM or VXD drivers for your Layla20 (version 5.06, or 6.04)? Is there anything else I should know about? SCSI? USB or firewire drives or devices? Are you using the Creative drivers for your SBLive, or the EMU or KX drivers?

Specific replies:

3) I have sent you an email personally requesting that you email me one of the 3.0 projects that is crashing for you. I would like to take a look at it and see if I can reproduce this behavior.

4) This is to be expected. Programs do not get a chance to close the audio device properly if they crash, and there is no way to recover from this cleanly.

5 and 6) Which VSTi's are you using?

Thanks,
Nate

"As I mentioned, I have a P2-400, 512k ram....."

I hope you have more than 512k ram. How about 512mb of ram?

At this point I finally have it working. I used it glitch free for about 1 hour last night. I hope to test it for several hours this evening.
