Subject:Audio Plays before display moves with ASIO driver

Using a M-Audio Dio2448 ASIO drivers, when you hit play in Acid 4a the audio starts playing before the track display & meters start moving. The visuals do not match up with the audio, which makes things a little difficult to work with. Same thing happens in the OPT Midi editor, so you almost have to guess which note it is you're trying to edit because the cursor is lagging by 5 beats or so (it's a fixed delay time, so the difference between the playback point and cursor point depends on the tempo of the song - 5 beats is approximate for 110bpm). Changing ASIO buffer settings has no effect. And another thing.... When using Battery VSTi and the Dio2448 with the ASIO driver playback is spot on. When I switch to WDM or MSM drivers, the timing of Battery goes mad. It sounds like you've applied a heavy (and inconsistant) shuffle or 'un-quantize' (!) on the midi data. The exact effect changes with the buffer size, and seems to get worse with larger buffers. at 0.10 the timing is just about ok. Otherwise battery is fine as I tend to stick with the ASIO driver (with the display delay problem). Mike K |

ibliss, What bit depth and sampling rate are you using for this project? Does setting it to 44.1kHz correct the problem for you? I have been investigating an issue in which some sample-based instruments may stutter or pitch shift notes at some higher sampling rates in some projects. I have seen the same occur in other VST hosts as well, so chances are that it's not ACID-specific. It is fairly uncommon, and hopefully we can narrow down the exact cause. If the problem you are seeing is related, using a project sampling rate of 44.1kHz will always correct the trouble. If it doesn't, then were are dealing with something else. Please let me know. A quick reply. I think I've timed this post badly as I'm about to go away for a couple of days, and don't know if I have enough time to investigate properly today - sorry about that. I felt I had to post, just in case this is something that has a work around already, or can be still be fixed for 4b. Anyway, a few more project details. I have never touched the audio properties for any of my Acid Projects, so I assume it's running at 16-bit, 44.1KHz. Battery is using one of the supplied Kits, which as far as I know all use 16bit 44.1 samples. Can't remember if you can run Battery at lower samp. rates or not...I know you can with Dynamo. But in any case, I haven't made any changes in this respect. It's important to note that the sample playback itself is actually fine, it's just the timing that changes. It's like you've gone into the Midi editor and randomly put groove/shuffle on all of the notes. So, if you had this rhythm (hi-hat top, Snare middle, Kick bottom) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 (beats * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * it might come out like this when using the WDM/MSM driver: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * I could record a couple of MP3s and email if you want (but again, don't know if I have time today). I will also check if it happens with other synths. Bear in mind too that all I had was a couple of MIDI tracks (only one feeding Battery), with a project tempo of 110 bpm, no CC info. Timing is rock solid using the ASIO drivers, but I have to put up with the display lag. Play Battery 'live' is fine with any of the drivers (latency taken into account, of course) so playing * * * * * * * * always comes out as * * * * * * * * when playing live with a keyboard. Hope this helps. Mike K |

THE MESSAGE BOARD IGNORED the spaces in my post, made the timing example look wrong. Here it is again, with dashes! So, if you had this rhythm (hi-hat top, Snare middle, Kick bottom) 1---2---3---4---5---6---7---8--- (beats *---*---*---*---*---*---*---*--- ----*-------*-------*-------*--- *-------*-------*-------*------- it might come out like this when using the WDM/MSM driver: 1---2---3---4---5---6---7---8--- *--*-----*----*---*-*----*--*--- ----*--------*-----*--------*--- *------*---------*-------*------ Mike K |

(still came out kind or wrong :( I think you get the idea - bad timing!) |

Yeah, I got the idea, and it makes me think we might be talking about the same issue. Check the project's sampling rate in ACID (under File>Properties>Audio) and see what have. Try changing it around and see if it makes a difference. Let me know what happens. Nate |
