Subject:Acid 4.0a Freezes On Playback

I've had Acid freeze up when I push the play button about a half-million times. It does this on both the main playback button and the playback button in the piano list too. What's the deal?

I think in a previous post you said you have an Audigy..?

Which version of the drivers are you using? What is the filename that you downloaded from creativelabs.com?

What happens if you using the WDM/MME drivers for playback, rather than ASIO?

Nate

I have the original drivers but I can't update them. I tried installing the latest VXD drivers from the website and they caused all sorts of problems. The install program wouldn't install them and I almost lost my hard drive! By the way, what are VXD drivers? I've heard of MME, WDM, ASIO, etc. but never VXD.

I'm running Win 98 SE. It doesn't seem to freeze up when I'm using the MME drivers but I still get playback problems with these. The audio begins to distort after it's been playing a while and all of the onscreen graphics begin to stutter and lag.

The MME drivers work fine in Acid Pro 3. That's why I'm thinking that something is wrong in Acid 4.0a. I should add that the program also freezes at will too. It's not only on playback.

It freezes for me, too. So badly I've just quit working in it for a while. If it's any help, SOFO, I just downloaded the most recent update to Harmony Assistant, and it predictably freezes after I've had it loaded for less than a minute. It's been rock-solid stable until this upgrade. Myriad added some MIDI mapping capability, and I'm wondering if there's not something going on with Acid, too, in the MIDI department that's causing freezing. But Acid freezes even after I've rendered to wave. 4.0a is much worse in this regard than the first 4.0 was. Also makes me wonder if there's not an XP gremlin about.

AMD Athlon 1000 gig 512 RAM
SB Live! with current drivers (not ASIO)
XP Professional
LiveDrvPak.exe downloaded 6/25/02 (supposed to fix issues with XP)

Software is very complicated, isn't it? :)

"VXD" just refers to the way the driver interacts with the system. VXD ( always MME ) drivers are used with Win9x to access the cards through Windows. Win2k/XP do not allow virtual devices, and use the newer WDM standard instead.

When I asked about VXD drivers I meant, "Are you using the latest release of the Win9x drivers for your card?"

I have heard of big problems using the Audigy drivers if you have any other sound cards in your machine. Do you?
