Can you give a little more detail on what exactly you're using from Edirol?

Sorry, I was using the UA5 UBS audio box. But after sending a memory dump report to my friend at microsoft we saw it was reporting the edirol driver to be "bad"

Today, I removed the "bad" driver and was running microsoft sound mapper with my stock sound card and got another blue screen. I was running three NI soft synths when I crashed.
The other installed componant is the edirol UM550 midi box but I was not using any ecternal MIDI when I crashed.

Please help a driver issue newbie. On Windows-Is a blue screen just what happens when the system crashes-or is it a specilized crash.

Also, since I removed the driver and blue screened with acid again-is it acid? Or could it be the NI synths or the combination? My friend at microsoft said that only bad drivers will cause blue screen and not software...is this right.

Thanks

What version of Windows?

What does the blue screen say?

windows XP with latest updates.

Before removing the edirol driver the blue screen specifically mentioned the edirol driver as the culpret.

The most recent blue screen was none specific. It did not mension a specific driver but said a drvier was the problem.

I have an M-Audio USB Duo, which is very similar in function to your UA-5 (does 24-bit/96 kHz, mic preamp, etc.). I have some minor issues with its ASIO drivers (WDM works without a hitch), but they do work. What's strange is if I jack the latency all the way to, say, 40 ms at 96 kHz, I'll get more problems than if I was to set the latency at 7 ms (also at 96 kHz). (I am, of course, not complaining. :) )

Can you get its WDM drivers to work OK?

Is your UA-5 on its own USB root hub all by itself? (Do you have more than one USB root hub?) I'm sure you've already heard this from Edirol, but be sure that the UA-5 is on a root hub all by itself, which may necessitate the need for a card like this one. My Duo is on a USB root hub all by itself so the Duo won't have to share the full speed 12 Mbps USB bandwidth with any other USB device. (I have two USB root hubs.)

I am also using Windows XP as well.

HTH,
Iacobus

Thanks

I have not tried the WDM drivers (if they even have them) Im a little leary now.
I do have a card like that. I have a keyspan usb 2.0 -4 port. So I was running it on the card.So your saying that WDM is sometimes more stable than asio but with more latency?

This is the driver info from their site, I get confused because you say WDM and their WDM are ASIO.

WDM Audio/ ASIO2.0 Driver 1.1
May 28,2002

MME Audio/ASIO2.0 Driver 1.0

I ran the WDM Audio/ ASIO2.0 Driver 1.1 at edirol sugestion. Im pretty confused over these nameing convensions

asio will give you the lowest latency
wdm will give you moderate latency
mme will give you the highest latency

Right i get that part, but these say wdm/asio so does that mean wdm or mme can both be asio and also not be asio?

thats my confusion

One more Windows newbie question please (cross over from mac)

Is a blue screen a normal crash on a PC ? or am I experiencing something worse than others on this forum who are yelling "crash"

If my crashes (blue screening) are a standard PC crash-I might suspect it to be acid
because of all the "crash" ranting here. Or am I totally off base here

Thanks

try the wdm/asio download. it should install both wdm and asio drivers. then experiment to see which will work best for you.

as for blue screen errors: welcom to windows. when a component fails, your session is over.

i suggest you perform some moderate performance tweeks to your o/s. like a truck, you'll have to modify it to bear the load.
