Subject:Holy lag time with VST !

I'm trying to record a midi track routing the midi through to a vst instrument for sound. Holy delay batman between the time I play the note and the time it sounds.
It is more in real time if I use the microsoft wave table.
How can this be improved? How can the latency be optimized so there's little or none when using VST instruments. I'm running WinXP using a PIII 850 with 256 ram and a Soundblaster Live Platinum set-up. It should be more than enough to do what I want.
Would ASIO drivers for soundblaster help?

Any help is appreciated
Thanks
J.B.

"Would ASIO drivers for soundblaster help?"

Oh yes, absolutely. ASIO drivers are designed for low-latency. The standard MME drivers are just fine for wave playback, but for auditioning VSTi's, they're simply horrible. I have a SBlive! Platinum also, but I prefer using the kX Project ASIO drivers to the Creative. They're more music-app and performance oriented, with WAY more functionality, along with better latency. With a P3-800, you should be able to play your instruments with a 20-40 ms delay and no problems. If you need help installing them, reply back here and I'll help you out.

Nick

I need help, not with the istallation, but with getting set up for using a midi keyboard. With the soundblaster drivers, I can figure out my ports/in/to/from in the preferences screen, but with the kx driver set, there are too many items on the list for me to figure out the ins and outs.

Help!!!!!!!

thx

Okay Fres, no problem. First explain exactly what it is you're trying to do though. Do you want to play VSTi's with your keyboard, have Acid play your keyboard as an external device, both, or something different?

Glad to help,
Nick

I want to play vst's with my keyboard.
I am able to figure that out with the soundblaster drivers installed, but the lag time is too great. I believe the kx asio drivers would cut down on the vst lag time....

I will try again while i wait for you to respond...

Fres,

Sorry for the delay in writing back. You won't have to mess with the DSP at all after installing the kX driver in order to use the MIDI. Just open Acid, click "Options", then "Preferences", and then click the "MIDI" tab on the resulting dialogue box. Look at the region titled "Make these devices available for MIDI input". You'll have the following devices to pick from:

1. kX Control CT(model) 10k(chip) [port]
2. kX Uart CT(model) 10k(chip) [port]
3. [Any other devices installed]

To play VSTi's with your keyboard, use the kX Uart. That's the port that you MIDI goes in and out of, either via the LiveDrive or the joystick port on the back. The kX Control is for automating onboard FX parameters via MIDI CC's. A fun device, but you won't need it for this.

If you need assistance using the onboard synths or using your keyboard as an external device, or just any help in general with the kX driver, let me know.

Regards,
Nick
