OK so the loop region is either on or off. What if I want to audiotion a loop in the track veiw and have playback stop at the end of the loop.

You don't (that I know of). Just press the spacebar on your keyboard or F12. Press Enter to pause. Press Home or End to go to the beginning or end of the Loop Region when loop playback is turned on.
