No need to say you're new to the software, or audio editing in general. Your question pretty much told that prior. The Answer is: NO, can't be done. What you're asking for is similar to taking a black bucket of paint and then saying you'ld like to take the red out of it only. See question #6 of the FAQ section.

OK, for what you want to do, maybe "analogX" could work. Keep in mind there will be alot of bleed-through after you remove the vocals.

Why don't you get an app that works with midi files and use a midi version of the song you want. Then you can mute the parts you don't want. Solo the ones you want to practice.

See if that does it for ya.

Midi app... I have Home Studio 9. Just download midi versions of the song you're looking for (if it's available that is), and load the file into the app. Be aware that often the quality is so-so at best, but you get to practice with it.
My brother in law wants to do basically what you're asking. I'll load up "House of the Rising Sun" in HS 9 (no longer available) and render that out to a wave file and burn it to CD. On the same CD I'll burn the same song with the guitar muted out.
Actually, I might bring the wave file into Sound Forge to add reverb and such, to give it more depth, before I burn it to CD. That version will be good enough for background music when he plays guitar at family gatherings.

Maybe you just need to do the old hiphop trick of stealing bass lines from old recordings. Just use an EQ and roll-off the high end. Take an EQ make a low pass filter around 500Hz and cut all the frequencies above 500Hz by -20dB to -30dB. That should give you enough of the bass line and drums to beable to practice over.
