Since I updated to Windows XP service pack 1, my Egosys U2A and my Tascam US-428 don't work at all. My MOTU 828 works sometimes, but other times crashes the system. This would bother me more if I wasn't absolutely thrilled that my Edirol SD-90 performs flawlessly now with low latency and minimal CPU overhead. Is it just me or do the current Edirol USB drivers put their boxes way out in front of the pack of current USB interfaces? I have the most recent drivers on everything, but the Edirol is my favorite by far right now. USB audio is so convenient, and they seem to be the only ones doing it right. Laurence Kingston |

ego-sys (ESI) has a new version of the ASIO driver for the u2a on the site. it's clears up the xp sp1 mess. beware my u2a doesn't play asio well with acid and no one will tell me why. i also so have an edirol ua-1. the fact that roland won't give away asio drivers for the simpler usb interfaces boggles my mind. the only choice is pay propagamma $60 for a driver. keep in mind the unit itself only cost $80. |

Well now I have a clue as to why my USB device keeps being dropped. Updated to SP1. I'll check around and see if there's a fix. |

I wouldn't get rid of SP1 though. Before SP1, USB audio worked on my Toshiba laptop, but with high latency and a high CPU performance hit. This was probably more noticable on my PIII 1.1 than it would be on a faster CPU. Anyway, since upgrading to Windows XP SP1, the CPU usage has dropped down to about the same level as a PCI audio interface. Virtual synths work as they should now. The low latency stability is way better too. I think what has happened is that Microsoft has finally fixed how they approach USB audio, but that it means that drivers have to be rewritten. Edirol seems to have licked this problem first, but I imagine that everyone will figure it out eventually. Laurence Kingston |

I have an M-Audio USB Duo that also is working fine (ASIO or WDM) with ACID Pro 4.0, 24-bit/96 kHz and all. Iacobus |

Are you using the XP Service Pack 1? I've been looking at the soon-to-be-released M-Audio Ozone to use with my laptop, but I've been leery of the drivers. Laurence Kingston |

Using XP SP 1 here. I've heard nothing but great things about the Oxygen8, so the Ozone should be OK too. Iacobus |

It looks like the way to go with a laptop: USB audio interface with balanced phantom powered mic input built into a midi keyboard. I just wish it was four or five octaves instead of two. Laurence Kingston |
