Subject:SF 6.0 freezes randomly during recording

Hello. I am trying to record long files (30-45mins) from my stereo system into my computer using a Gina20, and if I use SF 6.0, sometimes it works fine, but usually the computer simply freezes up at some point. There is no rhyme or reason to when: sometimes it's before I've even hit record, and sometimes it's 30 minutes into the recording. My computer set-up is a Gateway P4 1.7GHz with 512 MB RAM, a dedicated 9GB SCSI hard drive for audio recording, and WinXP. Since I never had this problem before I upgraded to WinXP, and since my Gina is an older version for which the manufacturer has issued only a beta driver, I first thought this was likely to be a soundcard problem. However, then I tried doing my recording through Sonar 1.0 and that works fine, all the time. Since I can then export the audio to edit in SF, I'm not really being held up too much by this problem, but it does mean a lot more disk housekeeping, and I'd prefer to keep my recording in SF if at all possible. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Thanks in advance for your help. Sherry Mayrent |

I had exactly the same thing happen with my new Sony notebook, XP-Home SP1, about 27 minutes into a live recording using Apogee MiniMe USB, the SF6 record screen just went into slow motion for what seemed an eternity, then went back to normal. Fortunately, I was making a simultaneous recording via S/PDIF to HHB PortaDisc, so I didn't loose the recording. Comparing the two files in SF6 later, the Notebook version is missing about 15 sec of audio. From what I've been reading the new System Restore "Feature" of XP is a big culprit in this sort of thing. I've since disabled it. Indexing service is another problem, according to blkviper.com. I wish SF would publish recommendations of system tweaks. There's another problem with XP that does not exist in W2KSP3, ie selecting 24 bit recording at least from Apogee MiniMe does not work in SF6 under XP, but does work under W2K. I should submit that to tech support, I suppose. Hope this helps, Regards, Rick Z |

Following procedure for XP eliminated the problem. RZ |

Hi Rick, Did you ever find a solution to this problem? It is happening, EXACTLY as you describe, even the slo-mo part, to me on my Centrino 1.3GHz laptop, w fresh WinXP SP1 straight from Dell. Thanks! Michael |
