When i open a sound file in sound forge 5 and preview it, it sounds louder and better than the original file. However I cant seem to save it to sound like this. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

What do you mean by "preview"? Once it's opened in SF are you just clicking "play" or are you launching a plug-in/process and previewing?

If you're just playing it and closing the file, then playing it in some other app. then probably either that app's settings need attention or it's an inferior app.

If you've applied a process, check the format you're saving to. Opening a 16/44 .wav, applying a process that improves the sound then saving to a compressed format (MP3,Wma,Rma etc.) at a lower bit depth and resolution could degrade the file to a point below the original *wav.

If you open a compressed (MP3,etc.) file in SF (or any audio editor) and even if you do nothing to it, then save it again as (MP3, Wma, Rma etc.) you will get loss, sometimes monumental.

Decompress > apply anything or nothing > compress = boooo.

I just opened the mp3 file in SF presed play and for some reason it sounds louder than the original. I am using Windows media player 7.01 to play the mp3 and i have turned the volume up as high as it goes in WMP. Do you know whats going on because i would relly like to save it the way it sounds in SF because it sounds much better. I know i can use wave hammer to increas the volume but this is a lot of hassle for 100's of mp3s. Thanks

WMP 7.01 Plays MP3's at a lower volume than other apps. If you turn SRS and the EQ on it's volume is louder. Play the same file in Siren or Winamp for a comparison.

As I stated in my previous post, editing an MP3 will most likely produce undesirable results. If you choose to I'd suggest not overwriting the original file.

Highlight each section you don't want and press the delete key. Save to a NEW filename so that you preserve the original file ... in case you decide later on that you didn't cut out the right parts or you want those parts after all.
