I own SF Studio 6.0. I am what Sonic Foundry call a 'hobbyist' and have been using the software to create CD compilations with half decent mixes between tracks - very much amateur DJ stuff - but fun and rewarding - my mates like'em too. There are a couple of things I would love to be able to do to improve these CDs.

1 - The end product is currently saved and recorded as a single mixed Wav - and audio CDs see it as a single 70+ minute track. Is there any way to mark/index/region the Wav so that CD players 'see' the original tracks and give me a proper track number listing?

2 - There is often quite a strong variation in volume between the burned tracks. What I have had to do is make a rough cut - listen to it on my CD player, make a note of which tracks sound relatively loud or soft to my ear, then gone back to the original mixed Wav and adjust the tracks (passages) within it using either the 'normalise' or 'volume' process. It feels a very crude way of doing this and ther is inevitably still noticable variations. Is there an alternative method within Sound Forge Studio?

I am aware that the easiest way to do all the above would be to buy CD Architect - but $200 is too much for a 'hobbyist' like me. It would be great if Sonic Foundry released a cut down "Studio" version of CDA - any plans SF?

I currently use the CD Burn function in Sound Forge - would using Nero 5.5 give me better results?

I'd really appreciate some feedback. Ta

Well.... how'dya do ahhh (or is it a different RifRaf ?).

You really need something like CDA.

You cannot insert track markers within a single file in a 'track at once' burning app.

You are trying to balance track loudness, which is easiest done track-by-track with either normalisation to an average RMS level. An absolute pain to do in SF because very fiddly (ne region at a time). You would need to split the regions in SF to separate files and run it in Batch Converter.

Why do you do it as a single big file ?

Check out the intro offer on CDA5 in this forum.

It would be pointless to offer a 'cut down' version of CDA because it is a specialised app, very focussed on what is required, and what would you cut anyway ?

For splitting the tracks, see my post;

Use Nero to burn DOA (Disk At Once), if you don't want gaps between tracks, I think you need to set that in Nero. If you're beat mixing these files you will have to address the volume/loudness before the mixing.
