Subject:asterisk following title prevents RMS normalization?

all of a sudden i am not able to normalize using RMS. the file will be scanned only and not subsequently normalized. i can, however, normalize to a peak value. i do not understand how this happened. the only related change i can see is that now the titles of files (whether saved or not) are followed by an "*". any suggestions? thanks.

Not sure why the other stuff would not be doable, but having an asterisk after the title means that the file is "dirty" (in other words, it's been changed since it's last save).
