Subject:Record "through" DX effects / plugins

I recently purchased sound forge after seeing all of the DirectX plugins that are available. I was ultimately planning to use an A/D converter to record my electronic instruments (guitar) and mic. I've been looking to perhaps get the Stompin' FX plugins (that look just like guitar effects petals). In playing with SF, it doesn't appear there's any way to record "through" the plug-ins. What I mean is that I'd like to try the effects out real-time while I'm playing, then record the "mix" of effects with the settings that I like. Are you only able to do effects processing on pre-recorded files (or only just for post production)? I probably know the answer, because the recording window does not appear to have an effects chain... Thanks, Tom |

<<I probably know the answer, because the recording window does not appear to have an effects chain...>> Correct, the only way to record your efx is to use outboard gear before your A/D converters. There was a recent thread about this explaining the technological aspects in the Vegas audio forum. If you want to use the SF and/or other plug in efx, just record your instruments and apply your efx later. Typically I will use some outboard compression when recording drums and percussion (especially the kick) and occasionally a little bit of compression on a vocal just to warm it or give some presence but otherwise everything goes in w/o any efx. Hope this helps. drbam |

Drbam, Thanks for the rapid reply... I guess I knew the answer, but I was kinda hopeful - some of the effects would be nice to hear real-time so the playing could match and best use the effect. I'll search the Vegas audio forum - didn't think to look there. Tom |
