Subject:Novice Needs

Anyone out there recommend an introductory (and inexpensive) book explaining what "clean" digital waveforms should look like (as opposed to "noisy") and a generous overview of the various digital audio formats and there properties (strengths, etc)? I'm kinda old and this is quite new to me.
