Subject:Meter clips in Forge but not other programs

In the process of testing a new CD-RW burner I purchased, I ripped a song
from Pearl Jam's new CD. This CD was maximized full tilt it seems with the peaks
set to 0 db. Well, in Acid, Vegas, and CD-Architect, the song peaks at 0, but in
Sound Forge it clips.

Anyone have any ideas why it's doing this? In the other programs I had no effects
or volume envelopes or anything. Just the track and master faders set to 0 db and
the songs peaks hit 0 but don't clip. In Sound Forge, the clip indicater just
lights up at every peak.

thanks,

Dave

The Sound Forge meter sits right in front of the hardware and monitors at the playback bit-depth, so it cannot display >= 0.0 dB. All it can say is when 0 dB is hit. If you hit 0 dB on consecutive samples and it is not a synth tone, it's a clip. If it is just a very hot recording with occasional but non-consecutive peaks at 0 dB, you are probably OK.

Here's a more scientific approach to see how the meters are calibrated instead of using something random like music. Create a 1Khz sinewave at 0dB within Sound Forge. Playback the sinewave. The meter should read 0dB. Now select the entire file and lower the volume -10dB. Now the meter should read -10dB. You could save these files and import them into other apps and see what the meters read in those also, for accuracy. You'll want to ensure all volume faders and master buses are set to 0dB, so these don't effect the levels of the signal being played back.
