can I set up a 3rd monitor?

I'm currently running Vegas on Windows XP with dual monitor support (Radeon 8500 video card) and it works beautifully. Today I was given a used 19" monitor from work and I'm wondering if there's a way to add this to my set-up. Currently I can drag windows from one screen to the other. I've been curious about this "Preview on External monitor button" in the upper left corner of the Vegas preview window and what it can do. Will this work for both TV and Computer Monitors? I also have a Sony Media Converter DVMC-DA2.

Now I'm no techie so I'm asking fellow Vegas users if any thing can be done, and also, would a 3rd monitor work the same as my current set-up (being able to drag more windows into the screen on the new monitor (or just video preview?)

I don't think this will work.

Preview on External Monitor is for viewing on a TV hooked up to a camcorder or Analog to Digital converter over firewire (1394). You can't move windows over to it. It only displays your preview in full screen NTSC or PAL on your TV.

In order to use a third monitor you would need a special card with special drivers like the Matrox Parhelia.

then you have what you need to use that external monitor button, except a TV or video monitor. a computer monitor won't work for that. but you should definitely get a TV hooked up so you can preview your work on it, that is if your destination format is for TV.

connections go like so:
PC --> Sony Media Converter --> TV

Thanks for the info. I do have a spare TV monitor for the Sony adaptor. With that in mind, I could then use the TV to preview just the video, and the other 2 computer monitors for the Vegas windows and other windows based things right?.

Exactly correct.

You can still use the third computer monitor to extend your desktop if you wish, but you'll need another video card to do this. While it's still preferable to use the DV->A/V converter for the preview display, Windows will allow you to spread your desktop across up to 9 monitors (good grief!). Now wouldn't that impress the clients when they stop by to visit?

NINE! Or, confuse them. I get enough neck and eye strain as it is.

ok one last question. is there a special adapter i would need for an older TV Monitor that doesn't have the newer video out connections? Of course I have the Sony Media Converter but what kind of chord/adapter for an Older TV? Maybe Radio Shack would have what I'm looking for.

thanks for all your help.

If the older TV set only has a place where the antena or cable TV line plugs in (coax), then you would need something called an RF (Radio Fequency) modulator. A VCR would work (and give you the ability to record) or, yes, Radio Shack makes a device called a video RF Modulator for about $30.
