OT: If you've been using Nero, you need this update

riredale wrote on 2/9/2003, 8:15 PM
For those of you who use Nero to burn VIDEO_TS files to DVDs, you need to get over to www.ahead.de and get the latest version. Apparently, previous versions would burn an image that was rejected by some DVD players. In my own experience, I found that Sony players hated my burned DVDs; I did a new burn with the new version earlier today, and now the Sony players play the disk fine!

Of course, many will be using DVD Architect to burn, but Nero remains a very valuable program, and I'm glad that this mystery of why some disks play on certain players is getting resolved.

Thanks for the tip!!
I can't burn from DVD-Architect (get coasters), so I am dependent on Nero for burning the DVD files that I create and "prepare" in DVD-Architect.

What is the version number that we should get past?

Hi -

According to www.ahead, we should be on Nero 5.5.10.7b (unless you already have 5.5.10.7, and then you should download the patch). Is that where you were heading, 'riredale'?

Just got the Sony 500A and stuck the 1.0g firmware version in it. Have been playing with the Nero 10.7b, and not coasted anything yet. Tried the sample-program in DVD-A and it works. However, have not been able to try it with real DVD-A, haven't received it yet. I'd already plunked my money down to get in-line for a retail copy before the download-version was announced, and am now anxiously waiting for the delivery-guy.

Wait! I hear the doorbell! Gotta ru..

5.5.10.7 is the version I installed over the weekend. DVD-Rs burned with this version have so far played in EVERY DVD player that refused to work with my disks burned two months ago with 5.5.9.0.

Funny thing is that disks burned with the previous version worked fine in most players. I'm very curious as to just what was changed, or, looking at the issue from a different angle, just what was it that some players saw that they didn't like?

Any idea what the "Booktype DVD-ROM" checkbox means in the latest version?

Also, are the powers that be now suggesting that we can use DVD-Video again when for a while the use of UDF 1.02 has been recommended?

Thanks, Al

Don't know what "Booktype" means. I am actually burning with the simple-interface "Nero Express," which makes the process very easy.

All I do is to click "add," select the VIDEO_TS folder to be burned, click "finish" and that's it. As of today, every DVD player that rejected disks made by the previous version now works fine. Amazing. I'm beginning to wonder if ANY player won't recognize these disks.

So you don't ever see the options for DVD-Video, UDF, UDF/ISO etc?

I've been using ISO/UDF (UDF 1.02) to burn with Nero 5.5.9.17.
If it works, why changing?

BTW, when burning with Nero using ISO/UDF format, it reconizes it's recording a DVD-Video format (from VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directories?)

Interesting, all the possible variables.
I've used Nero's DVD-video setting, which comes up with "pre-installed" folders for Audio and Video TS. Then I drag my files from my DVDA project into the relevant folder(s), and burn. I've had good luck so far, producing DVD-R and DVD-RW that work just fine on my living-room Panasonic DVD player.

...haven't tried Nero's UDF setting. Are there reasons that might be better?

If you find a setting that works for you and you don't need to play those discs on any other players, then that's fine but what has been happening is that a disc that plays great on machine a) doesn't play on machine b) etc. Sometimes I've had a problem when with a certain Nero setting the machine that plays nearly anything now won't play the disc whereas a picky machine that wouldn't previously play the Nero discs now suddenly plays them. It's complicated because Ahead like SoFo are a pretty good company in terms of updating when there is a problem so there have been many updates since this was first reported. I'm pretty loyal to them as they were the people that enabled me to make VCDs and SVCDs 2 years ago so I will persevere for the time being. Every time that a new checkbox appears though, like "X-box compatibility" it does tend to further confuse the situation. I'm not getting the help files on the latest version. Does anybody know if you've got to download them as a separate file?

Also re: DVDA, can you burn a disc from an existing VIDEO_TS folder? I haven't had the chance to play with the prog that much.

Al
