Subject:Varying recording levels

My recording levels were fine for months, and just here of late they have changed and I don't know what caused it. My left channel is recording at about 3-5 decibels softer than my right channel. I'm not sure if this affects the recording or not, but it's been bugging me for some time now. I've tried calibrating the levels and it doesn't seem to help at all. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Have a look in your soundcard mixer applet. Some have splittable levels for each channel.

Or maybe your soundcard or source is broken.

Assuming this is happening on input, perhaps the bal. (pan) control somehow got moved on your soundcard controls.
To check it, double click volume control icon; Select Options/Properties/Recording

Balance is fine. Levels are equal when recording on my laptop (but that's through my mic input so it's in mono, so you wouldn't notice a difference then I guess?) so I'm wondering if it may be either my mixer or soundcard. I don't notice a difference coming out of the left/right speaker so I don't think it's my mixer. Is there anyway to test/check if my soundcard is going bad?

Cheers for the responses guys.

What your saying is: the levels are fine going in .. but coming out, one side is down? What do the SF meters show on playback? if they are up, it's your sound card.

Yeah, on playback the left channel is 1-3 dB's less than the right channel. I usually just raise the volume of the left channel after I'm done recording to even them out. =\

What sound card are you using? Does it have "Balanced" inputs (ie Tip/ring/sleave). Does your source have balanced outputs? If this is the case it sounds like there's a problem with one of your chords and you lost one side of the balanced inputs/outputs, which will result in around 6dB less input and added noise floor.
