Subject:Sonic Foundry programs not seeing drives

Apologies for the cross forum posting but:

I have Sound Forge 6e, CD Architect 5, DVD Architect 1.0a and Vegas 4.

I also have an LG DVD Drive and a Sony DRU-500AX (internal R/WR).

Everything I have is fully up to date.

I also have Nero and DLA (the DVD re-writable software that came with the Sony drive)

Due to an incompatibility between Nero and DLA, which was causing the drives to lock up, I therefore uninstalled Nero. The result: none of the Sonic Foundry programmes could see either drive, either to read from, or to write to, despite uninstalling and re-installing all 3 (SF) programmes.

I then re-installed Nero, and, hey presto! The Sonic Foundry programmes can once again see both drives.

What on earth is going on?

it may have something to do with the ASPI layer configuration. are you using Windows XP? if so, it does not come with the ASPI layers by default. more info here :

http://www.ncf.carleton.ca/~aa571/aspi.htm

you can check if you have the ASPI layers installed by downloading and running the following program :

ftp://ftp.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspichk.exe

if you're running XP you should have ASPI32.SYS and WNASPI32.DLL installed. if they're not installed you can download the latest ASPI drivers (v4.71.2) here :

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/suppdetail.html?sess=no&language=English+US&prodkey=ASPI-4.70

you probably need to reboot after you install them.

i guess the reason your SoFo programs work when Nero is installed is because Nero installs its own ASPI drivers during setup, and SoFo's products simply use these layers in their programs.

hth
