hello,
i'm relatively new with Sound Forge (got an older version, 4.5), but I'm trying to record from (relatively good quality) tape and I think recording levels are too high, i.e. as soon as I start recording, the play meters get into the red zone and it clips (and the recording gets distorted). How can I reduce input level to 'normal' level to get good sounds?

Thanks
Utrecht

Does your tape deck have an output level control? If so, turn it down. If not, double-click on the little speaker icon in the lower right corner of the screen to bring up the sound card's mixer control panel. Select Options / Properties / Recording / OK. You'll now be looking at the input level controls. Turn down the Line In control. Your peaks should probably be hitting somewhere between -12dB and -3dB to give you some safe headroom.

I ran into this problem, too: clipping off the extremes of the waveform and hearing the "fuzzing" of the sound at these places. That happened when I had a tape that sounded wonderful by itself.

I began setting the recording level much lower. That eliminated the clipping. I now also use "Normalize" if the recording is too faint.

A little experimentation and experience will find an ideal range of record volume settings on the input mixer applet, or player device.
