Subject:Encoded MP3 shows different lengths in different players

When I convert a WAV to MP3 in Sound Forge 5, the resulting file shows the wrong time in Winamp and Windows Media Player. For example, my latest song is 3:53 (actual) but shows as 5:15 in Winamp and 1:41 in Windows Media Player. Only QuickTime Player gets it right (3:53). Anything I can do either a) during encoding or b) to the MP3 file to fix this?

Thanks in advance,
- Frank

What happens when you play the MP3 in WinAmp and WMP? How does the slider move along, and how does the seconds/minutes count proceed?

In Winamp the slider seems to move along as if following the correct time - it reaches the end when the song finishes, even though the Song Title area shows the longer incorrect time. In WMP the slider moves along as if following the incorrect time, and just stays at the end while the rest of the song finishes playing. The time display in both shows: actual correct time progressing / incorrect total time.

This sounds very simular to the problem I found in Vegas 4.0. I edited some video and rendered it to an "Mpeg" format. The length of the video was 1:18. I then opened it in Windows Media Player v7.01 installed on a win2k pro machine and it reported the video of being 0:08 in length. I haven't downloaded and installed the latest windows media player, so I'm not sure if this is a problem with Sonic Foundry's MPeg/MP3 plugins or a problem with Windows Media player. I reported it to SF, so I'm not sure if that saw it as a Windows Media Player problem, but I know the latest update to Vegas 4 didn't fix the problem.
