Subject:Removing Crowd Noise...possible??

I just did a 3 camera shoot of a concert at a local club, the sound from the band came out great, the only problem is that there is a lot of crowd noise that I would like to reduce as much as possible. Is there an easy way to do this in Sound Forge??

The simple answer is NO. Basically Garbage IN = Garbage OUT, when recording. I actually answered a similar post to someone who had this same problem awhile back.

Here's that post in this forum if you want some recommendations of avoiding this type of thing in the future.

You might be able to reduce it to some extent in noise reduction but the more
you reduce the noise the worse the other stuff gets---echos, hollow sounds, etc.
It will literally take the life essense out of the sounds you want to keep. Then
again, the crowd noise is part of the ambiance.

"You might be able to reduce it to some extent in noise reduction"

No you won't. Noise reduction works by having a constant noise throughout the recording and then reducing that constant noise. Crowd noise is really not a constant noise, although it might sound like a bunch of jibber jabber, it's a lot of people jibber jabbering different things at different levels.

Since white noise loading is used to check a fully loaded communication
system (people talking a whole bunch) for performance a small sample section of
crowd noise might do some good (3db). If its a small crowd then as the Borg say,
"no way". I just made that up. I think I would just get some good mics and leave
the little bit of crowd noise in, start right from the beginning.

That's what I figured, I just thought someone might have come up with a way to reduce it. With that said, does anyone know of some good Mics to get that can be plugged into a MiniDV camera instead of just using the one on the camera?? Normally I shoot in crowded areas (bars, clubs etc...) Usually about 30-75 feet away from the stage and PA system. Would a shotgun or zoom Mic be good for this, I have been looking at the one that Sony makes, but since my cameras are all Panasonic I'm not sure if it would work as well.

Check on the Cow forum http://www.creativecow.net Vegas video section
and ask for DSE. If he doesn't know nobody does.

Best you could do would be to play around with Noise Gating. May end up sounding unnatural, especially if there are quiet bits....

there is nothing you can do to eliminate the audience noice once youve recorded it. What you need are some directional microphones to plug into your camera. check out www.core-sound.com I bought a pair of their stealth cardioids and they work great.
email me pvt and ill send you an mp3 of some of my results from a similair thing to what you doing.

cheers
