Subject:New user...input to laptop?

I am considering purchasing SoundForge 6.0. I would be using it for editing of live recordings from various formats(pro cd recorder, DAT, etc.) What are my choices for excellent quality input to a laptop. Are 3rd party USB breakout cables the best choice? If so, what brand and model? If not, any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.

You can consider solutions such as those from M-Audio, Echo, and Edirol. At least one product from each manufacturer (except Echo) features a USB interface with S/PDIF.

In addition, FireWire interfaces are starting to trickle out like the new one from M-Audio. (It's not available yet though.)
