Subject:Editing MP3 file

When I try to edit an MP3 file, and then save the changes, it takes time to save (compared to when I edit a wav file of similar length). I assume that it is encoding the file into MP3. With this assumption, does this mean that it is compressing the already compressed file (further degregating the file)?

Essentially yes. SF opens the file and converts it to wave (without the data that was removed during the first compression of course) then when you save to MP3 more data is removed from the file to compress to MP3 again. Similar to opening a .jpg image, editing and saving to .jpg again.

Edit the file in .wav format. When you're finished, then convert to mp3.
