Subject:error: Microsoft Sound Mapper in Use by Another Application

Sound Forge and Acid used to work fine on my PC, running WinXP and using an M-Audio Delta Auidiophile 24/96. I didn't use them for several months because I was doing other things. Now, I get sound out of my PC no problem, mp3's out of WinMediaPlayer, songs including audio and softsynths out of Logic.

But whenever I try to play audio out of Sound Forge or Acid, I get an error box that says "Microsoft Sound Mapper in Use by Another Application. Close or suspend the application that is using the device and try again."

I tried closing all the usual suspects: QuickTime, RealPlayer, Kazaa, IE. No luck. Does anyone know if any of the other apps that usually start with Windows would take over the Sound Mapper?

Also curious: Under "Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Audio Tab", my Delta soundcard is not listed as an option (which is probably why the Sound Mapper can't see it). I reloaded the newest sound card drivers but it still doesn't recognize it. This is very odd because I am getting sound out of the computer in all but Sonic Foundry apps. (fyi it does list the soundcard under the 'Hardware' tab, and says the device is working properly).

Any help much appreciated.
