Hello, I'm using a RME Hammerfall DSP cardbus + Multiface with a Windows XP laptop. I'm trying to sample audio in Soundforge 6.0 via the internal CD drive. However, I can't get Soundforge to record it, there's just no signal going in to the programme. I've tried adjusting the audio preferences in soundforge to all possible soundcard combinations but with no avail. The soundcard is working OK and playback of audio files in Soundforge is otherwise fine. Any tips/solutions? Thanks |

How about File->Extract Audio from CD? |

That's what I'm resorting to at the moment, but I only want to extract a few seconds from each track, which in some cases are quite long. Using my previous card (M-Audio 2496) was easy enough, just play the CD at the relevant place and hit record in SF - hey presto! Can't seem to do this with the RME though :-( |

I don't have a Hammerfall, but usually what you have to do is goto the windows mixer>OPTIONS>Properties>Recording. Make sure "CD Player" or "Stereo Mix" is checked, then hit "OK", then put a check box in the select record device window. Stereo Mix will allow you to record anything you are hearing for playback. CD player will record the CD player. This might not available for your sound card, most professional sound cards don't have this option of recording what you hear functionality. Probably because they figure if you're using a professional sound card then you're probably using a mixing board along with it, so this is easily achievable with a mixer when you have your bus outputs connected to your soundcard inputs. |

Thanks, I think you're right about this. I don't think the Hammerfall will record onboard CD audio - luckily there's also a Soundblaster which seems to do the trick. Interesting point you made about 'pro' cards not being able to functionally record; seems strange when prices are falling to the level where they're within the budget of many home recordists such as myself. |

It's really just a question of whether the sound card has an analog input for the analog CD-ROM wire (and whether it is hooked up). Many pro cards don't bother since this is often considered a 'consumer' path. It's analog and potentially lossy, whereas digital extraction is lossless. Why not rip the entire CD, then region it while playing back in forge? You can always delete (or simply not save) after extracting the desired bits. And you can seek much more quickly (at the cost of going for a fresh coffee while ripping <g>). J. |
