Folks: I am including an audio file (originally recorded in 11Khz 16 bit mono) in a PDF file which will launch when clicked on. For a variety of reasons, I am embedding the file directly inside the PDF file. I've been informed that the older versions of Windows Media Player only plays .wav format and since my user base is very non-technical, I am looking for the best format which doesn't require the user to install a new player (and to keep the resulting file as small as possible). What format does this group recommend I use to have universal portability as well as compactness keeping in mind that I am trying to support XP, W2000 and W98? I am not concerned about supporting the Mac. Thanks, - Alex - |

*.wma 8 will be supported by any WMP 7.1 and above since 7.1 and above will automatically download the necessary codec. WMP 6.4 may also but that's so long ago I don't remember. You can do the research for WMP 6.4 at microsoft.com for specifics. Bottom line is that the vast majority if not all to date will have at least 7.1 installed unless they are one of those paranoid purist MS haters. *.wav is hugely unnecessary and impractical in this case if Acrobat can embed *.wma. I don't use *.pdf so what formats it supports is beyond my scope. I do know you can embed Mpeg layer-3 format achieving very small file size per quality in MS office apps. MJ |
