Subject:How do I change the default format a file opens in?

Every time I open a new file, it opens at a sampling rate of 44.1 Mbps, stereo, 16 bits. How do I change this default? I'd like to change it to 8 kbps, mono, 16 bits, but so far, I haven't found a way to set this default.

"Open"? Sound Forge will open files in whatever format the file is.

Do you mean create a new file with File / New? Sound Forge remembers whatever settings you used last. Change this to your desired default format and that's what Sound Forge will use until you change it to something else.

I expected that the file/new would remember my last selected preference for the format, but it doesn't. I have SF 6.0e (Build 237) installed on Windows XP Version 5.1 SP1. It doesn't seem to ever change from the original default of 44,100 kbps/stereo/16 bits.

Has anyone else seen this problem??

The file you open is going to dictate what the format is as Chien says. If you open a potato, it's going to open as a potato, not a carrot.

I'm not sure what the "New" method is about, just tried it, if I create a new file, set the attributes to 44,1 kHz/16 bit, then open an MP3, it opens as an MP3. Unless I'm missing something, until you "Save As" the file is going to be whatever it was until the save process.

SF 5 & 6

When you open a new blank file, it opens it and assigns it a default format. To see what format it is, you can right click in the signal display and select Properties. On my installation, the default seems always be 44,100 kbps/16 bits/stereo. To change this format, I have to go through this property dialog.

All my work involves 8 kHz sampled, 16 bit mono files. I'm generating test files in this format. Everytime I open a New (empty) file, I have to go through this property dialog, change the sampling rate, change stereo to mono and then select left channel from the pop-up window. This is a pain. As Chienworks indicated, SF is supposed to remember the last format you selected, but on my installation, it doesn't. Perhaps this is an XP problem??

I'm using 6.0e on both XP Pro and XP home. When i click File / New, i get a little dialog box labeled "New Window" which has choices for sample rate, bit depth, and channels. I set my desired properties here. The next time i click File / New this dialog box pops up with whatever choices i selected the last time.

Ah, When I use File > New, I get the dialog box with the previous settings also. When I click the "New" button in the toolbar I just get the empty data window and the attributes are the same as what I have set in properties.

Dsut;
Did you set the attributes in File > Properties, then check the box for "Save as default..."

Thanks a lot guys. Between Chienworks and mjhig I figured out my problem. I was always hitting the new file toolbar button to open a new file. I was never opening a new file using File/New. I assumed that the toolbar button was equivalent. It isn't. The File/New path brings up the format dialog for you to select a format. This format then becomes the default for the newe file toolbar button from then on.

Thanks again!

Very interesting! I would never have thought of clicking the toolbar button. To me, clicking File / New is much more intuitive because i can read the words. Even though it's two clicks, it's easier for me to do than to remember which the right toolbar button is, look for that icon, and then click on it.

It is surprising that they're not identical in operation though.
