Subject:Unwanted Mic echo??

Hi there.

I'm trying to help someone (who lives on the other side of the country, which certainly doesn't make it easy!) to figure out how to do some basic recording with her copy of SF6. I don't actually use the product, but for her sake I downloaded the demo. Nice program! I was able to figure everything out and instruct her how to record, edit, mix, etc., but the problem isn't with the program, apparently, as she is getting an unwanted echo when recording. She is not very computer savvy, so it's not easy to get through all the stuff about checking the soundcard drivers and settings and everything. Yes, the speakers are off, and yes, the echo is ending up on the recording. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions or thoughts about what might be causing that or what to do.

Her basic specs are:
WinXP
Compaq
512 RAM
Avance AC97 soundcard

Thanks much.
Shaz

You might want to check the inputs on the sound card. There are separate windows for monitoring (listening, playing back) and recording. If she's using the mic input on the sound card then she should select only the Mic input in the recording window. If she has both this and the "what you hear" inputs selected then that might account for the echo since she'll be recording both the original mic signal and also the slightly delayed playback monitor.

To switch between the two sets of input selection, open up the sound card's mixer control panel (usually accessed by double-clicking the speaker icon in the lower right corner of the screen), choose Options / Properties, and then Record.
