Using Sound Forge 4.5, how can I take a downloaded MP3 and
convert it to a WAV file for editing?

Hello,

As long as you have the latest version of Sound Forge, which is 4.5h,
you can open and edit mp3 files. If you need to convert an mp3 to a
wav file, you can open the mp3 and then select "Save As" from the
file menu. Under "Save As Type", select "Wave (Microsoft)(*.wav)"
and Sound Forge will save the file. Hope this helps.

Ted H:
I have the SoundForge XP 4.5 version, but it will not open an .mp3! It gives me a message, "file not in a supported file format" Do I have to have 4.5h? If this is an upgrade from 4.5, where do I go to upgrade it?

Cassandra, i believe that earlier releases of 4.5 did not include the MP3 encoder/decoder. You will need the latest version which is available here:

http://www.sonicfoundry.com/download/step2.asp?DID=113

You'll have to enter your SoundForge XP 4.5 serial number.

All SonicFoundry software updates are available here:
