I am using SF 6. I have a wav file that was made from an analog tape that was recorded on a walkman. There is a lot of tape hiss that I want to get rid of. I have tried using the Spectrum Analysis tool but I can't seem to figure out what it is telling me. I have also tried using the EQ but I can't seem to find the right combination of frequencies.

Any help with the frequency ranges of hiss or the use of the tools will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

This is really a job for Noise Reduction 2.0 but if you want to try EQ, us the paragraphic, there is a preset for Hiss cut. Experiment with that setting and even changing it from high shelf to band if you can so as not to cut more of the spectrum than necessary.

The best way to proceed is to purchase Noise Reduction 2.0. (It's a Sony product, formerly SF) It is expensive, but I haven't run into anything better. Take a sample of the hiss from some place in the tape where there is no music (or what ever content you are trying to improve) then use that sample to process the rest of the tape. The results are quite remarkable.

Thanks for the ideas. Right now, Noise Reduction is a bit too pricey considering the small amount of audio that I have to process. It's hard to justify the purchase.

Thanks.

You can download a seven-day demo version of NR. It works just like the full version but only for seven days. Go to the Support - Downloads section.
