I have been trying to clean up some hum and background noise from shooting dv. When I do the noise removal, if I remove enough of the slight hum..well the voices sound kind of distorted and tinny. Am I not doing it correctly or do I have to go back in and add something to the voices or does anybody know the magic dv settings??? Thank you. |

If the noise spectrum overlaps that of the speech then you'e got a problem. Pulling out the noise part of the spectrum is also going to affect the voice. However if its just plain 50/60Hz hum then that shouldn't be the case. Try using narrower filters, also oftenly what's causing the problem are the harmonics. rather than using a low shelf use narrow notch filters at say 60,120 and 180Hz. That should avoid hitting the voice too much. If you're applying any compression to the voice will make matters much worse too. If you have to try to set the compression knee above the level of the noise and get the noise out before compression. |

It sounds like you're trying to reduce the noise too much. Back off on the "reduce by" amount and also try a different mode value. For what you are doing I find mode 2 or 3 to be a better noise reduction without the flangy tinny sound side effects. |

Thank you both for your help. If you have the time, could you take me thru it step by step because when I do it the voices sound tinny and the footsteps sound like "point" like ambient sounds for alien landscape...kinda like the movie Forbidden Planet. |
