hello, i am using creative sound blaster live 5.1 and i also have an installed on board realtek sound card. how do i use the on board sound chip for monitoring purposes and at the same time i be able to use the creative sound card for the other file at the same time. by going to option, preference, wave playback it changes the whole route for all the files. how do i route one file to the on board sound and another file to the creative card at the same time. ive searched in the manual accompanied in teh package and in the internet but i cant seem to find the solution. please help me. thank you.

so you want to play 2 files at the same time, 1 going thru the Realtek and 1 going thru the SB Live?

Sound Forge cannot be set up so that it works with 2 soundcards. i don't know of any audio program that can, but they might exist.

anyway, there is another problem in your case: Sound Forge can't play 2 files at the same time, even with just one sound card.

the only thing i can think of is installing 2 different versions of Sound Forge, and then set up a different card for each program. then run both versions of Sound Forge at the same time. but that's really a cumbersome way to work.

I believe Vegas and Acid can use 2 sound cards at the same time. At least in my setup it does, but those are 2 identical soundcards which have drivers written to support multiple cards. In your case this might be less than ideal, because you're using 2 different sound cards, which means the audio will most likely be a little out of sync, if that's a concern.

Maybe it's better we take a step back and ask you, "What are you trying to achieve in doing this?" There may be other options that will work much better and easier. The path you're taking will probably cause a lot of grief.

For what it's worth, I ended up getting in a USBpre today that I ordered recently, and installed it on my laptop. Within Vegas I could use both sound cards at the same time, which was the USBpre connected to my USB port and the Laptops onboard sound card. I played 2 seperate files and routed them within Vegas to the individual sound cards.

thanks for your opinions, and as rednroll asked what am i trying to actually achieve by doing this is coz some loops are difficult to match the track that would be mixed with. i heard about the monitoring way as i mentioned at my 1st post and i thought i would be able to do that in sound forge 6.0 too. the whole purpose of this is to be able to mix the loops to the track well and quicker by being able to hear the beat of the loop using the headphone and track using the speakers. is there any kind of solution towards my problem or any tips of mixing better at sound forge. any reply would be appreciated. thank you.

Actually, with what you are trying to do Sound Forge is not a good tool for this. Having seperate sound cards will not solve your problem. What you need is a multitrack type of program, where you can mix the files and edit the loop more easily. The ideal tool for doing this would be Acid. You could also achieve this within Vegas, but would be a bit more work on trying to match the tempo of your loop to the original file. Acid has an automatic beat mapper tool that can assist you if you are just beginning doing this type of thing.
