Subject:SF7a Auto-Time recording glitch?

Tried the Automatic Time recording option last night. Wanted to capture a 30 minute late night radio show (Ken Nordine's Word Jazz) which is way past my schedule :-) This evening when I checked (yeah, I didn't check first thing in the morning) I had an error message on screen saying that the audio device was in use by something else. I clicked OK and then the message popped up again. After clicking and seeing the same behavior 34,674,345,654 times (slow learner) I went to the Task Manager (Windows 2000 Pro is the OS) and shut down SF7. I restarted SF7 on a hunch. It said it found some temp files from a crashed session. Opened them and there was the full recording. So, Sherlock that I am, it seems the error didn't occur until after SF had finished the recording. That particular event was set to Weekly and there were no other events in the list. If memory serves I had set it to Multiple Takes in Regions and to automatically rearm. Sorry the documentation isn't fully detailed but I wasn't expecting anything like this to happen. There were no other programs or processes running to cause a conflict. This workstation is dedicated to audio and video post production and testing and there have been no conflicts with the sound card, etc. I think it is something funky in SF 7.0a. Next time I'll try to tie it down better. Any thoughts? |

I would venture a guess that when the recording ended, the device didn't close properly and the record dialog kept trying to re-open it to drive the meters every thime you hit the dialog (that is odd, it shouldn't keep trying to open the device once it fails). I'm happy to hear that crash recovery worked for you, though! What type of sound card were you using? J. |

The card is a Creative SB Live! Series (WDM) and in the properties for the device is says "PCI Slot 3 (PCI bus 1, device 14, function 0)" I will be migrating my Delta 1010 system to this workstation in a couple weeks, so the card will be changing. Never had any problems until now, however. I did try a couple tests of timed recordings (30 seconds two minutes apart) and couldn't repeat the error. Of course the machine knew I was testing it :-) BTW, for audio and video post-production, should I look to using the ASIO drivers for the Delta 1010? I actually don't know what ASIO stands for but from what I've picked up it appears they are faster and lead to less latency. That hasn't been any problem for me since I don't do any live recording on the post-production workstation. Thanks for the info. Wayne |

ASIO is a proprietary driver standard controlled by Steinberg. While ACID and Vegas support ASIO (for the low-latency you mentioned), Sound Forge currently does not. J. |

I downloaded the latest driver, with ASIO support, from M-Audio for my 1010. The workstation the 1010 will be moving to has both Vegas 4 and SF 7 running on XP Pro. Am I going to get myself into trouble if I install the latest driver or would SF know (or the driver know?) how to deal with SF not supporting ASIO? Thanks. Wayne |

No. Sound Forge won't even go looking for the ASIO driver, much less recognize it. I'd just be wary of situations where you may be trying to access the card with two different driver models (via concurrently running apps like Vegas and Sound Forge). J. |
