Talk about luck, just ordered SF, great local deal, basically for the price they throw in NR and CDA. Anyway within hours of ordering been asked to rip 18 hours of archival audio to mp3 to go out on a DVD!

All source is on DAT tape and client will supply DAT drive. I'm certain all DATs have balanced audio out but I am hoping to stay in the digital domain. Can I expect these devices to have SPDIF or AES/EBU? Some of this stuff could be 80 years old so although it isn't going to be high quality I want to preserve as much as possible before it's ripped. I assume the mp3 encoders that come with SF are as good as they get.

Any suggestions on soundcard that can handle all of these i.e. balanced line in, SPDIF and AES/EBU. Should be enough money in the job to cover buying something half decent.

BTW, I can get a Flying Cow, is that likely to be of any use in this scenario?

Even consumer DAT machines should have spdif but only professional units would have balanced analog. A good soundcard would be the Echo Mia which meets your requirements (www.echoaudio.com). Echo cards work great with Sony/SoFo apps - never any frustrating driver issues.

Most Dat players have spdif digital outs. I have a Panasonic SV-3800. It has both AES and Spdif, but you have to goto an internal menu to select which you want to use, you can't use both at the same time, it's either one or the other.

Just make sure that you set the word clock to "External" or "Spdif" for your sound card when tranfering audio digitally from the DAT player.

I'm using an Echo Gina card, which has a single digital IN which is of the RCA connection type(ie spdif), but it can be switched between AES or Spdif to be able to except either type. The Echo Mia is the same.

Thanks for the info guys.
Can i ask your opinion of the Firewire 410?
Looks like it'll do the job as well but with that I can also use it to do digital recording with my laptop.

I haven't any experience with the 410. I would suggest posting a new question (on the Vegas audio forum as well) with "Anyone Use Firewire 410?" as the heading. Maybe you will get some responses.
